Where does Turquoise Come From?

Turquoise is one of the oldest gems in the world!  The word turquoise dates all the way back to the 17th century. It is derived from the French word turques for Turks because the mineral was brought to Europe from Turkey. In ancient Persian Empire, the sky blue hue gemstones were used to wear around the neck or wrist to protect against unnatural deaths.

The influence of turquoise has been used in famous buildings such as the Taj Mahal interior.

The Dome of Rock in Jerusalem uses a lot of turquoise stone on its outside walls.

The famous Pharoh Tutankhamun's death mask was adorned with turquoise.
